A. A. Gill
For over twenty years, people turned to A. A. Gill's columns every Sunday - for his fearlessness, his perception, and the laughter-and-tear-provoking one-liners - but mostly because he was the best. 'By miles the most brilliant journalist of our age', as Lynn Barber put it. This is the definitive collection of a voice that was silenced too early but that can still make us look at the world in new and surprising ways.In the words of Andrew Marr, A.. A. Gill was 'a golden writer'. There was nothing that he couldn't illuminate with his dazzling prose. Wherever he was - at home or abroad - he found the human story, brought it to vivid life, and rendered it with fierce honesty and bracing compassion. And he was just as truthful about himself. There have been various collections of A. A. Gill's journalism - individual compilations of his restaurant and TV criticism, of his travel writing and his extraordinary feature articles. This book showcasesthe very best of his work: the peerlessly funny criticism, the extraordinarily knowledgeable food writing, assignments throughout the world, and reflections on life, love, and death. Drawn from a range of publications, including the Sunday Times, Vanity Fair, Tatler and Australian Gourmet Traveller, The Ivy Cookbook and his books on England and America, it is by turns hilarious, uplifting, controversial, unflinching, sad, funny and furious.

A great book with funny, clever, surprising and wonderful observations about life.

I can’t believe he is no more - we miss his ascerbic wit and reliable restaurant and tv reviews - London is emptier without him.... This book brings him back to life for at least a little while. You will love it if you already know AA Gill and if you come to him for the first time, lucky you.

Amazing - the best of AA.

I've got all his other books but still found this a joy.

A.A. Gill wasn't just a restaurant critic he was an observer of life.

A.A. Gill gives you stories from a life well lived. Entertaining, funny and at times sad and thought provoking. He's able to convey a feeling and a connection with the reader.

The really best of A.A.Gill

I am a super fan of the man ever since I read his restaurant reviews for the London Sunday Times many years ago. He has a wonderful way with words that makes one chuckle, giggle or laugh out loud. This book is a great example.

An object lesson in journalistic writing.

As a regular subscriber to the Times/Sunday Times I sorely missed AA Gill's contributions, in particular, to the ST Mag. The arrival of "The Best ...." collection was much welcomed as it embraced items of exceptional journalistic endeavor not just from the Times but also from various submissions to other media all of which are of the same superb standards of quality, perception, interest and amusement. Very strongly recommended indeed.

I never read A.A.Gill when he was alive

...and that was my loss. I read a few extracts in bookshops and thought. "This man can write" and bought the Kindle edition. I wouldn't do justice to him if I attempted to paraphrase anything included in this volume. In the mostly short pieces here he seems to choose the right number, and best, of words, no more, no less. His allusions and similes are spot on. You might not agree with every word, but he makes you think about your hitherto forth prejudices. My advice is to download a sample and see what I mean.

Direct, funny and so entertaining

This book is a compilation of articles. A A Gill was a restaurant critic for The Sunday Times and gained a reputation for honest, quirky and highly entertaining reviews which always touched upon the absurd. He was sharp, humorous, direct and a total delight to read. He gained a large and regular following; for the value of his writing and insight rather than the review. I was saddened by his untimely death and was delighted to find this book which collects a selection of his articles. He brightens any day and lives on.

Buy this book, you will get more out of it than you think.......

I looked forward to this arriving, as I did with all of Adrian's books bar none....this has not disappointed in any way, buy it, it may actually change your life once you've read Adrian's battle with his own 'full English' on his cancer journey....

A collection of creative delights

One of the best writers, such a sad loss. I return to his writings regularly and this volume is a welcome addition to my existing collection. Each sentence is carefully crafted, he paints elegant word pictures and with warmth with and humour - worth a read.
